What a solo-founder brand needs from a custom storefront

Lessons from SHBT’s move from WordPress to a custom Medusa shopping website, with SEO included in the rebuild.

A solo founder has to think about the products, customers, marketing and the website at the same time. A storefront should make those jobs easier to connect. It should give the brand room to express itself while helping customers find what they want.

That was the context for our work with SHBT, a clothing brand previously selling through WordPress. Nick Creatives built a custom shopping website on Medusa and optimised it for SEO.

Understand what the rebuild needs to change

A new platform is not automatically a better business decision. The useful question is what the existing setup makes difficult and whether those limitations matter enough to justify a rebuild.

For a fashion store, that discussion can include the way collections are presented, how people discover products, the checkout journey and the work involved in operating the store.

Those are questions to investigate, not assumptions that every WordPress store has the same problems. Some businesses will benefit more from improving what they already have.

Give the brand a storefront of its own

Medusa provides a commerce foundation that can support a custom shopping experience. In SHBT’s case, our team moved from the previous WordPress setup to a Medusa-based website.

The current SHBT storefront presents oversized shirts, tops, dresses and tunics. It also connects shopping with editorial content. A customer might arrive knowing the category they want, or needing help with how to style a piece.

A useful storefront needs to accommodate both kinds of visit.

Treat search as part of the structure

SEO was included in the SHBT engagement. For founders planning a similar project, the lesson is to bring search considerations into the rebuild brief early.

Think about how categories are named, which questions deserve their own content, and how a visitor moves from an article to a relevant product. Before a migration, also establish what existing URLs and search traffic need attention.

Those are practical planning considerations for a commerce rebuild. They should be checked against the actual implementation instead of being assumed from a platform name.

Keep the outcome connected to the business

Nick Creatives reports that SHBT’s sales doubled within three months of the rebuild. This is the result supplied for the project; it is not an independently audited attribution claim.

A website does not operate separately from the rest of a fashion business. Product availability, campaigns, pricing and seasonality can affect sales too. The useful next question is which parts of the customer journey improved and what the business should do next.

Build the part that earns its place

Custom commerce brings flexibility and responsibility. The founder needs a plan for maintaining the storefront and managing changes after launch. Choose it because the business needs that control, and scope the work around a clear benefit.

For SHBT, the project combined a custom Medusa shopping experience with SEO work. Read the full SHBT case study, or talk to us about your store.
